18 carat gold (18K) contains 75% pure gold. It carries the BIS hallmark number 750. It is best for diamond and stone-studded jewellery, where the extra strength holds the stones.
Before you buy gold jewellery
- Check the hallmark. Look for the BIS hallmark with the purity (916 for 22K, 750 for 18K) and the 6-character HUID.
- Ask for the breakup. A clear bill shows the gold value, making charges, wastage, stone charges and GST on separate lines.
- Compare the same karat. Compare 22K with 22K and 18K with 18K. A lower price for a lower karat is not a saving.
- Rates move all day. The gold rate changes with the market. Note the time of the rate when you ask for a price.
