BIS hallmark and HUID: how to check your gold is genuine
Gold jewellery sold in India carries a hallmark that says how pure it is. Reading it takes a minute and protects you from paying for purity you are not getting.
What the marks mean
A hallmarked piece carries the BIS logo, the purity grade, and a 6-character alphanumeric code called the HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification). Hallmarking with HUID has been mandatory for gold jewellery in notified areas since 1 April 2023.
- 916 or 22K = 91.6% pure
- 750 or 18K = 75% pure
- 585 or 14K = 58.5% pure
- HUID = unique code for that one piece
How to verify a piece
Install the BIS Care app, choose the verify-HUID option and enter the 6-character code. The app shows the jeweller and the details registered for that piece, so you can match them with your bill.
What to ask at the shop
Ask that the HUID and purity are written on the bill and match the piece. A plain mark with no HUID on a new piece is a reason to ask more questions.
